If there was ever a perfect bride, my youngest daughter would be it.
Okay, Iâve said that about every one of my daughters, but seeing my very last one on the arm of my son, about to walk down the aisle to the love of her life and leave me an official empty-nester, was a different experience altogether.
âSheâs gorgeous,â Luna breathed beside me, reminding me that I wasnât quite as close to being an empty-nester as I may have liked to imagine.
I smiled at Luna, beautiful in an emerald-green dress that complimented her pale skin. I squeezed her arm. âIâm glad youâre here.â I sought out Kevin and Owen a few rows back and blushed when Kevin winked at me. He looked absolutely dashing in a suit that I had an inkling heâd rented special for this day. And when Iâd seen him earlier in the week with his face all shaven, Iâd practically swooned like a silly schoolgirl.
That face.
As handsome as he was with his short beard, to see the smooth lines of his jaw and the area around his mouth made me want to map every square inch of his skin with my eyes until Jesus returned. It didnât hurt that Kevin looked about ten years younger with the smooth face, and although he didnât look old to begin with, for the first time I could picture him as a more youthful version of himself. And if that wasnât enough to churn my insides into sweet butter, kissing that flawless face and the corners of his smooth mouth certainly was.
I blinked, forcing myself back to the present. My baby girl was getting married and I refused to miss a second of it because I was googly-eyed over my neighbor.
Thereâd be plenty of time to stare at him on the dance floor later that evening.
The ceremony was beautiful. Amie and August had chosen the very elegant venue of the Samoset Resort in Rockport, a short drive from Camden. As soon as the vows had been said, guests were ushered to a large, tented pavilion complete with a dance floor, white linen tablecloths, and sparkling stemware and silverware overlooking the shimmering Penobscot Bay.
I turned to Luna. âWe wonât be long with the pictures. Would you mind showing Kevin and Owen where our table is?â
I hoped this would include her while not rubbing her nose in the somewhat sensitive fact that she wouldnât be a part of the wedding photographs. What a horrible conundrum that no family should have to endure. Certainly, if Luna had been a part of our lives for longer than a month, Amie would have thought to include her in at least one picture. At least, I think she would have.
But who was to say how long Luna would be among us? Though I felt we had made some headway the other night, we still seemed a long way off from a true, healthy relationship. And what kind of relationship did a wife have with the daughter her late husband had conceived with another woman, anyway?
It was enough to make my head ache.
